A body composition measurement at the clinic

InBody Body Composition Scan in San Antonio & Boerne

Your scale tells you how much you weigh. An InBody scan tells you what that weight is made of. At Alamo Primary Care, our InBody body composition analyzer measures muscle, body fat, visceral fat, and body water in about a minute, giving you and your provider a clear picture of your health and progress at our Westover Hills clinic in San Antonio and on Main Street in Boerne.

What Is an InBody Scan?

An InBody scan is a body composition analysis that uses bioelectrical impedance, a safe, very low-level electrical current that travels through your body. Because muscle, fat, and water conduct electricity differently, the InBody analyzer can estimate how much of each your body contains, and where it’s distributed. You simply stand barefoot on the platform and hold the handles. There’s no radiation and nothing to feel.

What the InBody Scan Measures

Skeletal muscle mass

The muscle that powers movement and metabolism

Body fat mass and body fat percentage

How much of your weight is fat

Visceral fat level

The deep belly fat around your organs linked to diabetes and heart disease

Total body water

Hydration and fluid balance

Segmental analysis

Muscle and fat in each arm, leg, and your trunk, highlighting imbalances

Basal metabolic rate (BMR)

An estimate of the calories your body burns at rest

Why Body Composition Matters More Than the Scale

Two people can weigh the same and have very different health. A scale and BMI can’t tell fat from muscle, so they can miss what matters most:

  • Losing fat, not muscle: fast weight loss, especially on GLP-1 medications, can take muscle with it. InBody helps catch that early.
  • Hidden visceral fat: someone with a “normal” weight can still carry risky belly fat.
  • Progress when the scale stalls: building muscle while losing fat can keep your weight flat even as your body changes.
  • A more accurate starting point: your plan is built on your actual composition, not an estimate.

Who Can Benefit from an InBody Scan?

  • Weight loss patients: track fat loss and protect muscle
  • Patients on semaglutide or tirzepatide: make sure weight loss is coming from fat
  • People managing chronic conditions: monitor visceral fat linked to diabetes and heart disease
  • Adults over 50: check for age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia)
  • Athletes and active adults: measure muscle gains and training progress
  • Anyone starting a health plan: get an accurate baseline

We are thrilled with our first visit here. Everything moved very quickly and efficiently, as they seem to have a very effective team of employees. The appointment lasted approximately 1 hour, and that included new patient intake forms, vitals, seeing the doctor and getting labs done. I love how fast the process went, while also feeling seen, heard and feeling like our concerns were valid and taken seriously. The receptionists were all very friendly, inviting and helpful, including Delilah, who checked us out and set our next appointment. Finding a new primary care provider can be quite overwhelming and time consuming, but not here, and the services offered go above and beyond anything we expected. We look forward to future visits with this practice.

I’ve had a great experience with Alamo Primary Care. Everyone in the office has always been friendly, welcoming, and willing to help. The front desk ladies are always kind and make everything easy, whether it’s scheduling appointments or answering questions. The doctor takes the time to listen and explain things without making you feel rushed, and the PA has been just as helpful and knowledgeable. It’s nice to go to a doctor’s office where you feel like they actually care about their patients. Highly recommend!

This was my first time at this location and I was pleasantly surprised at every turn of this appointment. The front staff were incredibly welcoming and equally as funny. I’m a nervous talker so they humored me and it helped me calm down a lot. The doctor was punctual and very thorough for a first time visit which was a pleasant surprise. He had several follow up questions about each of my concerns and gathered more information as well as educated me more than any physician I’ve seen on a first visit. Excellent first impression and visit.

I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Dr. Vishal. From the moment I walked in, I felt comfortable from the check in with the ladies up front to the medical assistants in the back! He talked to me, not at me. He listened to my concerns, asked thoughtful questions, and made me feel validated. He came highly recommended and I never felt one ounce of regret. It’s such a relief to finally have a primary care doctor who makes you feel seen and heard. 10/10 recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get an InBody scan in San Antonio, TX?

Alamo Primary Care offers InBody body composition scans at its Westover Hills clinic, 12047 Potranco Rd, San Antonio, TX 78253. The scan takes about 60 seconds and measures muscle, body fat, visceral fat, and body water, with results reviewed by a medical provider.

Where can I get a body composition test in Boerne, TX?

Alamo Primary Care provides InBody body composition testing at 1411 S Main Street, Boerne, TX 78006, open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Results are printed immediately and explained by your provider as part of your health or weight loss plan.

What does an InBody scan measure?

An InBody scan measures skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, body fat percentage, visceral fat level, total body water, segmental muscle and fat in each limb and the trunk, and basal metabolic rate. Alamo Primary Care uses these results to guide personalized care.

How accurate is an InBody scan?

InBody uses multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance and is considered reliable for tracking body composition changes over time, especially when scans are done under consistent conditions. DEXA scans are more precise but cost more and involve low-dose X-rays. InBody is ideal for regular progress tracking.

Is an InBody scan safe?

Yes. An InBody scan uses a very low-level electrical current that you cannot feel, with no radiation. It is not recommended for people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic medical devices, or during pregnancy.

Why use InBody instead of a scale or BMI?

A scale and BMI cannot distinguish fat from muscle. An InBody scan shows whether weight changes come from fat, muscle, or water, and reveals visceral fat that a normal weight can hide. This helps Alamo Primary Care patients in San Antonio and Boerne lose fat while protecting muscle.

How often should I get an InBody scan?

Most patients at Alamo Primary Care repeat their InBody scan during a weight loss or fitness program. Scans every other month are frequent enough to show meaningful changes without being affected by daily fluctuations.

Should I get an InBody scan while on semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Yes. GLP-1 medications can cause rapid weight loss, and some of that loss may be muscle. Regular InBody scans at Alamo Primary Care help San Antonio and Boerne patients confirm they are losing fat and adjust nutrition or activity to protect muscle.

How often are visits in a medical weight loss program?

At Alamo Primary Care, patients typically visit weekly for B12 and Lipolean injections and monthly for a provider follow-up. Monthly visits include progress review, InBody results (every other month), and medication dose adjustments when needed.
